Biography

Shepard Fairey (américain, né le 15 février 1970 à Charlestion) est un artiste graphique de renom, célèbre pour son travail sur les images d’André The Giant et sur le mot obey. Fairey est né en Caroline du Sud et s’intéresse à l’art en 1984 lorsqu’il commence à utiliser ses dessins sur des T-shirts et des skateboards. Le père de Fairey est médecin et sa mère agent immobilier. L’artiste étudie à l’Idyllwild Arts Academy de Palm Springs en Californie, obtient son diplôme en 1988 et sa Licence en Beaux-Arts de l’École de Design de Rhode Island à Providence en 1992.

Pendant ses études, Fairey travaille à mi-temps dans une boutique de skateboards; cet emploi convient à l’artiste en herbe puisque ses intérêts sont portés vers la culture de rue et les graffitis. À cette époque, l’artiste est également intéressé par la musique punk et quand un ami lui demande de lui expliquer la création d’un pochoir, il choisit l’image banale d’André The Giant trouvée dans une publicité d’un journal pour la démonstration. Peu après, Fairey utilise l’art du graffiti pour introduire ses œuvres dans la rue. Deux des célèbres pièces de Fairey sont Obey (1992) et Hope (2008), qui est un portrait emblématique du président américain Barack Obama que Fairey a réalisé pendant la campagne présidentielle de 2008.

Fairey s’implique à la fois dans des expositions individuelles et de groupe dans différents endroits. Il organise des expositions solo à Capsule à Birmingham (2000), à la Kantor Gallery Window de New York (2003) et à la galerie Merry Karnosky de Los Angeles (2007). Les expositions à la galerie CPOP de Détroit, (2001), au Ducky Waddles Emporium d’Encinitas (2004) et à la galerie OXOP Gallery de Minneapolis (2006) figurent parmi les expositions de groupe auxquelles il participe. Fairey reçoit le Brit Insurance Design of the Year Award en 2009 pour son affiche Hope. L’artiste est au centre de polémiques selon lesquelles il utilise le travail d’autres artistes sans leur permission. Fairey reçoit une commande de Time Magazine en 2011 pour réaliser la couverture du magazine. Fairey est représenté par la galerie Irvine Contemporary à Washington, DC. L’artiste vit et travaille à Los Angeles.
